Smooth-stalked meadow-grass is a persistent grass with strong rhizomes and erect leafy shoots. It is frequently found in natural grasslands in both mineral and humus rich soils. It is common in temperate and relatively moist regions of both northern and southern hemispheres and tolerates hard wear. Because of its rhizomes, it can regenerate even if the grass sward is badly damaged. Growth starts early in spring and regrowth consists mainly of leafy material.
