Changing environmental and climatic conditions challenge your forage production. Grasses that can better handle spring and early summer drought will result in a healthy and high yielding crop.
Hybrid ryegrass is a cross between perennial and Italian ryegrass. It combines the benefits of the two: yield, quality and persistence. Hybrid ryegrass has good drought tolerance and spring growth is similar to early perennial ryegrasses.Heading is more like intermediate perennials. This gives a great deal of flexibility in the spring and high quality forage plants. Diploid varieties will tiller more than tetraploids varieties and form a dense stand dense stand which is more competitive with weeds, and can handle lower fertility and wetter conditions. Diploid varieties are more erect growing and plant structure tends to be prostrate, which helps protect stands from animal impact and weed competition. Stands are a little more persistent and perform better in heavier grazing scenarios.
High milk or meat yields are essential for running a profitable farm.
The key to this is to keep your herds well fed with home-grown forage.
