DLF's AgritaiN selected as a 2025 Sustainability Case
We are thrilled to announce that AgritaiN, one of DLF’s latest forage innovations, has been selected as one of the 2025 Børsen Bæredygtig Cases – a recognition of tangible, scalable projects that contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable future.
The initiative from Børsen Bæredygtig highlights real-world solutions that can inspire new approaches to sustainability across sectors. With this recognition, AgritaiN is acknowledged as an agricultural innovation with the potential to make a measurable environmental impact.
AgritaiN is the result of DLF’s targeted research and plant breeding aimed at delivering climate-resilient and innovative solutions for modern agriculture. It is a specially bred variety of ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) – a perennial herb traditionally found in pastures and known for its high nutritional value and palatability to livestock.
Initially developed by DLF in New Zealand and now introduced to the European market, AgritaiN contributes both to productivity and environmental performance in forage systems. It is a strong performer under varying soil and climate conditions, and a valuable component in perennial forage mixtures.
Reducing nitrogen leaching – naturally
AgritaiN supports climate-smart farming by reducing nitrate leaching by up to 89%, a critical priority in efforts to protect groundwater and aquatic ecosystems. It achieves this through four natural mechanisms:
- Dilution: Increased water intake stimulates urination, dispersing nitrogen over a wider area.
- Reduction: Shifts nitrogen excretion from urine to faeces and animal products like milk and meat.
- Delay: Secondary compounds slow the conversion of ammonium to nitrate in soil.
- Inhibition: Root exudates suppress nitrifying bacteria, further delaying nitrate formation.
These mechanisms work in concert to keep nitrogen in the root zone longer, increasing uptake by plants and reducing environmental loss.
Meeting the future with innovation
AgritaiN is gaining strong interest across Europe as part of the growing movement towards multi-species and herb-rich swards. It exemplifies DLF’s commitment to combining scientific excellence with practical impact – enabling farmers to meet the challenges of productivity, climate adaptation, and environmental responsibility.
We are honoured by the recognition from Børsen Bæredygtig and will continue to drive innovation that supports a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector.
