THE ROOT TO AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY LAWN
As the environment and climate continue to undergo changes, the task of managing lawns has become increasingly challenging. To address these evolving needs, we have conducted thorough screenings of various grass varieties. Our objective is to identify and select the varieties that demonstrate a higher resilience to the specific challenges posed by spring and early summer drought. In addition to drought tolerance, we have also evaluated the grass varieties' capacity to effectively utilize nutrients. Nutrient management is crucial for maintaining a healthy and vibrant lawn.
The secret is in the roots of the plants. We have gained extensive knowledge about grass root architecture and offer lawn grass varieties aimed at mitigating the effects of drought.
Our expertise in root architecture of our grass seed varieties is derived from our extensive R&D network and the exceptional RadiMax root screening facility. Our findings reveal that grass varieties possessing deep-reaching roots and substantial root mass cope better with fluctuating environmental and climatic conditions, such as drought. Varieties with an extensive root system, provide a robust foundation that leads to a quicker establishment of lush green lawns, enhanced visual appeal, and significant cost savings due to reduced irrigation requirements.
A deep roots mass means:
- Greener, healthier and more attractive surface
- Quick and better rooting gives higher wearability and the lawn is usable sooner
- Less maintenance
- Less input of resources like water and fertilizer makes it environmentally friendly
A fast root growth is always an important factor as it helps the plant establish faster. The root architecture is also very important under drought situations where there is still water at deeper soil layers.
Through a fruitful partnership with Copenhagen University, DLF is pushing the boundaries of root architechture research by utilizing the world's most advanced root screening facility, RadiMax. This state-of-the-art facility not only provides us with the ability to visualize roots at depths of up to 3.0 meters but also allows us to simulate increasing drought conditions through a controlled soil moisture gradient. By leveraging this cutting-edge technology, we can thoroughly analyze the root structure of our grasses and determine which varieties stay green longer under drought conditions.
Seeds coated with SeedBooster® have what it takes to prepare for a spring drought
Turf managers can mitigate the risk of losing newly sown turf to spring drought by utilizing our innovative ProNitro® seed coating. This unique coating provides targeted nutrition to the delicate new plants, enabling them to thrive with enhanced growth and develop deeper root systems. As a result, ProNitro®-coated seeds yield seedlings that establish more quickly and boast roots that are 30% longer. This increased root length significantly enhances their ability to withstand and survive spring drought conditions, ensuring a higher rate of turf survival.
