Low maintenance and friendly environment
Golf roughs need to be low maintenance but even looking, making it possible to retrieve lost balls. Input of water on roughs is negligible and fertilisation is at a minimum. Therefore very different types of varieties can be used here in contrast to other parts of the golf course.
Red fescue For golf roughs the more open rubra rubra types of red fescue should be chosen. This type has strong rhizomes and will regenerate and spread even after a down period in dry summers. Red fescue is one of the species that looks evenly under low maintenance requiring longer intervals between mowing. Varieties with the lowest and slowest regrowth are preferred.
Hard fescue This is one of the most drought tolerant species to be used for extensive areas. Growth is similar to red fescue but the colour is more blue. This gives the golf course a distinctive look.
Poa pratensis The heat tolerance of Poa pratensis is quite high making it useful in warm climates. The spreading of rhizomes enables good recovery after a dry period. Varieties with a slow regrowth and high disease resistance are preferred.
Tall fescue Tall fescue is ideal in hot and dry areas due to its very deep-rooted system making water uptake very efficient. Tall fescue stays green even in dry summers enhancing the overall look of the course. The colour is darker green than the other grasses on the course thus further improving the appearance. Broad-leaved varieties are preferred as they have better drought tolerance.
Browntop (Agrostis tenuis) Browntop is very adaptable to various soil and growth conditions filling in the gaps very well. The more rustic varieties should be chosen.
